Alexander Goodman (2003)
Alex joined Atlas Chambers in 2005 from 2 Harcourt Buildings. Prior to that he undertook pupillage at Landmark Chambers. He has a busy practice split largely between planning and environmental law and asylum.
Planning and Environmental Law
Alex undertakes work in all areas of planning and environmental law. He has acted in minor inquiries ranging from village greens, to conservation areas, to gypsy sites and at major inquiries appearing on behalf of Transport 2000 at the Thames Gateway Bridge inquiry and on behalf of Lady Berkeley at the Lots Road Power Station inquiry.
The decision in the latter was recently the subject of a section 288 challenge in the High Court in which Alex was led by Richard Drabble Q.C. (see River Thames Society v First Secretary of State [2006] EWHC 2829 (substitution of Claimant) and (see Berkeley v First Secretary of State [2007] EWHC 670 (Admin)) and is now the subject of appeal to the Court of Appeal. Alex is instructed by Richard Buxton.
Alex has been acting for the past year for the Kings Cross Railway Lands Group in opposition to proposals for one of the largest developments in Europe. Alex is now led in a judicial review of the grant of planning permission by Paul Stinchcombe and John Hobson Q.C. An injunction was recently obtained preventing the demolition of listed buildings. The substantive hearing is to be at the end of May. Alex is instructed by Leigh Day and Co.
Alex has a strong commitment to pro bono work in this field and frequently works on behalf of the Environmental Law Foundation.
Asylum
Alex regularly conducts asylum appeals. He has recently undertaken a number of cases in the High Court concerning the provision of prophylaxis against malaria to immigration detainees which resulted in the Home Office revising its policy. Alex is a director of the Medical Justice Network an organisation concerned with the civil rights of immigration detainees.
He often takes pro bono work in this field, both on a case by case basis and for the Free Representation Unit and Bail for Immigration Detainees.
Other areas of particular interest to Alex include discrimination and human rights law.
Alex frequently lectures on Gypsy and traveller law and European Environmental Law and conducts planning inquiry training for expert witnesses. He has written a number of articles including 'Planning Highlights of 2006' for the Journal of Planning and Environmental Law.
Before joining the bar Alex worked as a fashion model and actor and as a volunteer in a project for drug addicts.
